Lyman D. "Ladd" Bedford handles litigation in the areas of commercial, real estate, insurance, product liability, natural resources and employment-related matters, as well as the formation, counseling and general representation of medical and surgical centers and other health-related organizations.

During his career, Ladd has tried more than 125 cases to judgment or verdict in State and Federal Courts. Major victories include the successful defense of an action brought by the FDIC in connection with a bank failure where his clients' exposure exceeded $11 million. He has served as lead trial counsel for the Water Quality Association, the national trade association of manufacturers and retailers of water treatment products, and successfully challenged a series of municipal county ordinances banning automatic water softeners, and prevailed at both the trial and appeal levels.

Since the late 1970's Ladd has been counsel to a Pulitzer winning newspaper in the San Francisco Bay Area, providing First Amendment advice and protecting the rights of the newspaper from protracted attacks by the cult known as Synanon.

Since 1996, Ladd has been lead counsel for the plaintiffs in Hage v. United States, an important water and property rights case in the United States Court of Federal Claims, which has generated three published opinions. The first phase of this case, tried in October 1998, resulted in important Federal land use decisions in favor of the client.

Ladd served four and one-half years in the United States Air Force as a Judge Advocate, stationed in Georgia and Japan. Following his JAG experience, he spent the next four years with a major insurance company, first as litigation counsel and then in the position of Senior Regional Counsel, where he supervised ten litigators and their support staff and was responsible for more than 800 active cases.
