Hanson Bridgett LLP Recognized by Three Independent Publications as One of the Bay Area's Best Law Firms (August 20, 2009)

The Firm's Training, Mentoring and Flex Time Policies Contribute to Associate Satisfaction and Retention, Promotion of Female Attorneys

August 20, 2009 (SAN FRANCISCO, CA) - Hanson Bridgett LLP announced today that three independent publications have recently recognized Hanson Bridgett as a great place to work as a result of its work place policies. Hanson Bridgett ranked sixth nationally, second in San Francisco, and third among "Non-Amlaw" firms in American Lawyers' mid-level associates survey; was named a Top 50 Best Law Firms for Women by Working Mother Magazine; and ranked fourth in California for most women partners[1] by California Lawyer Magazine.

Hanson Bridgett has long understood that it must train and support its attorneys for the firm to be successful. As a result, Hanson Bridgett has several policies and programs that give attorneys the training and flexibility they need to build their legal careers while maintaining work-life balance. In most cases, associates are assigned to work directly with partners and are given the opportunity to gain significant legal experience early in their careers. The firm also supports its attorneys in community service and pro bono activities so that they may gain invaluable work experience and find additional job satisfaction.

"Hanson Bridgett has always strived to be a great place to work and that is reflected in our various work place policies, associate mentoring program, and retention and promotion of female attorneys," said Managing Partner Andrew G. Giacomini. "To have our associates and independent publications validate what we have been doing is gratifying."

Examples of Hanson Bridgett training and flex time policies include a one year temporary mentor assigned to all new attorneys, after which most attorneys select their own formal mentor, and providing resources for attorneys to participate in professional development training, such as the Women's Rainmaker Roundtable—at a two-year, comprehensive coaching program that helps women build their books of business.

Hanson Bridgett also allows and encourages all of its lawyers to work a flex-time schedule and has a formal telecommuting policy that does not require prior approval. The firm has a flexible sick leave policy that allows attorneys to use their own judgment instead of imposing a bank of sick leave time and provides family care and medical leave pursuant to all applicable laws. Female attorneys are eligible for pregnancy disability leave without any length of employment requirements and regardless of part time status.

"Hanson Bridgett's part time and flex time polices are more than words on a piece of paper as currently 23 of our 61 partners are on a reduced schedule of some kind," stated Sandra L. Rappaport, Hanson Bridgett's Recruiting Chair. "Further, taking leave or working a reduced schedule does not prevent attorneys from being promoted to partner. In 2009, 60% of our new partnership class was on maternity leave or already working a reduced schedule when they were promoted."

About American Lawyers' Mid-level Associate Survey

To find out how third-, fourth-, and fifth-year associates rate their firms as workplaces, American Lawyers' annual midlevel survey examined 12 areas that contribute to job satisfaction, including relations with partners and other associates, the interest and satisfaction level of the work, training and guidance, policy on billable hours, management's openness about firm strategies and partnership chances, the firm's attitude toward pro bono work, compensation and benefits, and the respondents' inclination to stay at their firm for at least two more years.

About Working Mothers Magazine Top 50 Best Law Firms For Women

The 2009 Best Law Firms for Women application was developed in a partnership between Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers. Firms with at least 50 lawyers were eligible to apply and the application included detailed questions about the issues that are most important to the retention and promotion of female lawyers. The 50 winning firms were selected based on their workforce profile, family-friendly benefits and policies, flexibility, leadership, compensation, advancement and retention of women, among other criteria utilizing 2008 data.
