Matthew’s practice focuses on benefits and business litigation with an emphasis on the defense of complex class, representative, and multi-party actions in state and federal trial and appellate courts. Matthew has represented counties, cities, retirement systems and other public agencies as well as clients in the healthcare, technology, financial, transportation, life sciences, aviation and dairy industries.

Matthew has extensive litigation and counseling experience with pension and retiree-medical issues involving the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 (CERL), the Public Employees Retirement Law (PERL) and city retirement systems. He also represents plan sponsors and fiduciaries in connection with administrative appeals and in litigation arising under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). Matthew regularly litigates business disputes between owners, shareholders, officers and directors of companies involving contract, fiduciary duty, fraud, trade secret and tort claims and is well-versed in the Unfair Competition Law, and the Consumer Legal Remedies Act.

Matthew is committed to providing pro bono legal services to the Bay Area community. He has successfully represented clients in asylum petitions, licensing disputes and in expungement proceedings and recently served as a working group member to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Fairness and Accountability in Law Enforcement which investigated allegations of racial and other bias in the San Francisco Police Department.

Having worked in an international accounting firm and for a boutique investment bank, Matthew brings a unique and valuable perspective to his legal practice. During law school, Matthew served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Thomas E. Carlson in Federal Bankruptcy Court.
