As anyone in the seniors housing industry knows, the industry has been besieged by alleged elder abuse claims, which in turn have generated staggering increases in insurance premiums and limited the availability of insurance for seniors housing communities and skilled nursing facilities. Due to the financial constraints that most providers of senior care are under, be they skilled nursing facilities, or assisted living residences, they have been faced with tough choices regarding purchasing insurance or using an alternative to traditional insurance. A number of companies have elected to go without insurance or set-up self-insurance plans. Some are simply paying the higher premiums and taking higher deductibles and retentions to mitigate the expense.
