Gary Giacomini, Marin Legend and Hanson Bridgett Partner, Passes Away

December 6, 2016 (SAN RAFAEL, CA) – Gary Giacomini, one of the most influential and important leaders in the history of Marin County, and during the past two decades a partner with Hanson Bridgett heading the firm's Marin County office, passed away on December 2, 2016 at the age of 77.

Gary joined Hanson Bridgett in 1996 after serving for 24 years on the Marin County Board of Supervisors and numerous other statewide, regional and local government agency governing boards. At the time of his retirement from public service, Gary was the longest serving county supervisor in the history of California. As a partner at Hanson Bridgett, he advised clients across the corporate, government, land use, political & election law, and real estate practices. "Gary's influence in North Bay public affairs endured throughout his career following his decision to retire from the Board of Supervisors,” said former Hanson Bridgett managing partner, David Miller. “His cache never waned after leaving elective office, a rare accomplishment and a testament to the respect he had earned from all segments of the community during and after his many years of public service.”

Gary’s son Andrew Giacomini, managing partner of Hanson Bridgett, was appointed to the Buck Family Fund Board of Trustees at the Marin Community Foundation (MCF) just over one year ago. Gary was essential to the formation of MCF in the 1970’s, which today manages more than $1.6 billion in total assets and distributes upwards of $60 million annually in grants

“My father’s tireless work throughout our home region was an inspiration to my own career, our family, and his peers,” Andrew said. “His sense of community was instilled in me at a young age and is present in many efforts at Hanson Bridgett. While we are all saddened by his passing, we are filled with pride for the life he led and will find peace in seeing his work all around us.”

“Gary was a friend, mentor and father figure to so many of us,” said Hanson Bridgett partner Jordan Lavinsky. “Gary worked every day with enthusiasm, kindness, professionalism, graciousness and with the goal of always doing good. His generosity with his time, knowledge, and energy to help those around him was unmatched.”

Among other civic recognitions, a 1,500-acre nature preserve in San Geronimo is named the “Gary Giacomini Open Space Preserve,” featuring hiking and biking trails replete with views of wildlife and green hills.

Crossing the North Bay, Gary was a 20-year member and president of the board of directors of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. His local transit and environmental experience also included serving on the Northwest Pacific Railroad Authority, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission and a decade as California State Coast Commissioner.
